Planning engagement photos in Hawaii? Oahu offers everything from turquoise-water beaches and dramatic mountain views to lush tropical landscapes and quiet coastal locations. But with so many beautiful places to choose from, deciding where to take your engagement photos can be difficult.
As an Oahu photographer, I recommend choosing your location based on the look you want, time of day, crowds, accessibility, and the overall experience you're hoping to have.
Here are five of my favorite Oahu engagement photo locations for 2026.
1. Lanikai Beach
Best for: Iconic Hawaii beach photos
If you picture your engagement photos with white sand, turquoise water, and the Mokulua Islands in the background, Lanikai Beach is probably what you're imagining.
Located on Oahu's Windward Coast, Lanikai is one of the most recognizable beaches in Hawaii. The combination of soft sand, clear water, and offshore islands creates a classic tropical backdrop.
Why couples love it:
- Beautiful turquoise water
- Iconic Mokulua Islands
- Soft white sand
- Tropical Hawaii scenery
- Great for romantic, natural photos
Best time: Sunrise
Lanikai is also one of Oahu's most popular beaches, so I strongly recommend a sunrise session if you want softer light and fewer people.
Best for: Couples who want the classic Hawaii engagement photoshoot.
2. Kualoa Regional Park
Best for: Mountains + ocean
If you want your engagement photos to feel distinctly Hawaiian, Kualoa Regional Park is hard to beat.
The dramatic Koʻolau Mountains rise behind the park, while the ocean, palm trees, and open grassy areas provide plenty of variety. You can create several different looks without spending your entire session driving around Oahu.
Why couples love it:
- Dramatic Koʻolau Mountains
- Ocean views
- Palm trees and open fields
- Beautiful natural scenery
- Great variety for one session
Best time: Morning or late afternoon
This is one of my favorite choices for couples who want adventure engagement photos in Oahu rather than a traditional beach session.
Best for: Couples who want Adventurous looking photos without the hike and anyone who wants mountains and ocean in the same session.
3. Halona Beach Cove
Best for: Intimate beach photos + dramatic scenery
Halona Beach Cove is one of Oahu's most unique coastal locations. Tucked between volcanic rock formations along Oahu's southeastern coast, the small cove offers a more intimate setting than many of the island's larger beaches.
It's a great choice for couples who want their photos to feel adventurous and cinematic while still having a beautiful beach setting.
Why couples love it:
- Turquoise Pacific Ocean
- Dramatic volcanic rock formations
- Intimate beach setting
- Rugged coastal scenery
- Beautiful Hawaii backdrop
- Great for adventurous couples
Best time: Sunrise or late afternoon
For a quieter experience and softer light, an early morning session can be a great option. Late afternoon can also create beautiful warm light across the surrounding cliffs and coastline.
Best for: Couples who want romantic and adventurous engagement photos in Oahu with a unique coastal backdrop that feels different from the traditional Hawaii beach session.
4. Makapuʻu Beach
Best for: Dramatic coastal scenery + beach photos
Makapuʻu Beach is a beautiful option for couples who want their engagement photos to combine rugged Oahu coastline with a tropical beach setting. The deep blue Pacific, volcanic rock, dramatic cliffs, and surrounding mountains create a more adventurous look than a traditional white-sand beach session.
It's also a great location if you want a mix of natural, candid moments and more dramatic landscape portraits.
Why couples love it:
- Dramatic Pacific Ocean views
- Rugged volcanic coastline
- Beautiful blue water
- Mountain and cliff backdrops
- Adventurous Hawaii atmosphere
- Great variety for couples photos
-
Best time: Sunrise
Because Makapuʻu is on Oahu's eastern coast, sunrise can create beautiful soft light over the ocean. Early morning also tends to provide cooler temperatures and a more peaceful atmosphere.
Best for: Couples who want adventurous engagement photos in Oahu with dramatic ocean views, rugged landscapes, and a distinctly Hawaiian feel.
5. Kawela Bay
Best for: Privacy and tropical scenery
If you'd rather get away from the crowds, Kawela Bay on Oahu's North Shore is worth considering.
The area combines a quiet beach with lush vegetation and unique tropical scenery. Nearby trees and natural surroundings can create a completely different look from the bright, open beaches around Honolulu and Kailua.
It's especially appealing for couples who want their engagement photos to feel intimate and less like a typical tourist photoshoot.
Why couples love it:
- More secluded atmosphere
- North Shore scenery
- Tropical vegetation
- Beautiful beach
- Great for intimate photos
Best time: Late afternoon and sunset
Kawela Bay can be a great choice for couples staying near Turtle Bay who want to keep their photoshoot close to the North Shore.
Best for: Couples looking for a more private and adventurous Hawaii experience.
Sunrise or Sunset for Oahu Engagement Photos?
-
This is one of the most common questions I get from couples planning a Hawaii photoshoot.
Sunrise is usually the better choice for popular locations such as Lanikai and Makapuʻu. You'll typically have fewer people around, cooler temperatures, and beautiful soft morning light.
Sunset can create warm, romantic light and is especially beautiful on Oahu's west and North Shore beaches.
The best time ultimately depends on your location and the experience you want.
I recommend keeping your outfits simple and natural.
For most Hawaii engagement sessions, I recommend keeping your outfits simple and natural.
Neutral tones, earthy colors, soft textures, and flowy fabrics tend to photograph beautifully against Hawaii's beaches and tropical landscapes.
You don't have to perfectly match. Coordinating your outfits while keeping your individual styles usually creates a more natural result.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best location for engagement photos in Oahu?
Lanikai Beach, Kualoa Regional Park, Waimanalo Beach, Makapuʻu, and Kawela Bay are excellent options. The best location depends on whether you prefer beaches, mountains, dramatic coastlines, privacy, or a more adventurous experience.

How far in advance should I book an Oahu engagement photographer?
I recommend booking your photographer 1–3 months before your trip, especially if you're visiting during a busy travel period. Popular sunset dates and weekends can book earlier.

Sunrise and sunset are generally the best times for photography because of the softer, more flattering light. Sunrise is especially useful at popular locations because there are typically fewer people.

Can my photographer help me choose an Oahu engagement photo location?
Absolutely. A local Oahu photographer can help you choose based on your preferred scenery, time of day, weather, crowds, accessibility, and the overall experience you want.
